11 Bible Verses on Respect for People You Don’t Agree With

We are living through difficult times and God’s steadfast love can cure all. Be an example of Jesus Christ and the compassion he had.

The acts of a Christian leader are testing, yet so rewarding.

1. Galatians 3:28: There is no lesser or greater Christian

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male or female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

Paul is telling the Galatian believers that keeping the law is not what saves them. Faith in our Lord Jesus Christ alone is enough.

There is no lesser or greater Christian. We are all seen as equal in the eyes of God. Christian leaders seen in the bible were all different colors, shapes, sizes, and genders.

There is no correct image of who a Christian is, we are all God’s children. You are to be an example of Jesus Christ when working on becoming more like him.

Society sorts people into categories and roles. In Christ, those labels no longer decide anyone’s worth.

A poor man is treated no differently in the kingdom of Heaven. You are to treat everyone with this same mindset. God’s golden rule is simple, loving others is all that matters.

2. Mark 12:31: Love others as you love yourself

“The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

Jesus gave this as the second greatest commandment, right after loving God with all your heart (Mark 12:30), and here is why loving God comes first. Loving your neighbor includes treating people fairly, whatever their age or standing.

The command first appears in Leviticus 19:18, and a few verses earlier Leviticus 19:15 says to judge your neighbor fairly, without favoring either the poor or the great.

It is easy to judge, yet hard to accept judgment on yourself. Jesus commands us to love others the way we naturally look after ourselves (what the Bible says about loving yourself), and in the parable of the Good Samaritan He makes clear that “neighbor” includes people we would rather avoid.

Although this may not come naturally, good things will come when treating others, the way God created. Not everyone is easy to love, yet with selfless love you are capable of loving every person.

Prayers for others can go a long way when unsure of what your next step is. A greater love is to love those without judgment, ridicule, or shame placed upon them by you. Accept one another as Christ has accepted you (Romans 15:7).

3. Matthew 7:12: The Golden Rule

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.”

The Golden Rule comes from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), where Jesus taught His disciples what life in God’s kingdom looks like. He said this one rule sums up “the Law and the Prophets.” The Golden Rule is also a saying we have all clung to when teaching our children right from wrong.

A reminder of, “don’t do anything you wouldn’t want done to you.” It is a good test for any situation, especially when someone has treated you badly.

Little children learn from human behavior around them and the genuine affection we give to others, and from Christian activities for children that put kindness into practice. Pay special attention to not only your words but actions and reactions towards others. When you play back moments of interactions with dear friends, you can correct faulty behavior. Spiritual growth is seen when you are now able to correct and replace bad reactions with the ways of God. Let the Lord open your heart to treat others with not only respect but with compassion and love as he has for us.

4. John 13:16: Have humility values and serve others

“Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.”

Jesus explains why He washed the disciples’ feet. By doing a servant’s job Himself, He left His followers no excuse to think any task was beneath them. He put others first even though all authority was His.

Philippians 2:3-4 is the best bible verse for putting others before yourself. Placing your own pride and selfish ambition to the side for the good deeds of the Lord. A rich man is not greater than a poor man in God’s eyes. When pursuing a relationship with the Lord you are to cast away any worldly views that keep you from seeing people the way the Lord does. It starts with the humbleness of mind in you first in order to begin to serve others selflessly.

5. Colossians 3:12: Be respectful to everyone

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

Paul lists out five practices for Christians to follow. These traits that our heavenly father has drawn out for us are to change our own hearts, even more, to truly experience his love and empathy for others.

Galatians 5:22-23 explains the traits of the fruit of the spirit, which ends with self-control (see this Scripture on self-control and discipline). These are specific instructions on how to interact with those who portray Christ Jesus but also spread his steadfast love.

A dear friend could be battling something that has not been spoken of. This is the exact reason we are to treat everyone we encounter with a greater love than can be formed into words.

Compassion and patience can change someone’s whole day. Paul also warns against corrupt communication (Ephesians 4:29), at home as much as anywhere. Respect shows in our words and actions, toward the people we love and complete strangers alike.

6. Proverbs 16:24: Use words of kindness

“Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”

Kind words do real good. Proverbs says they bring sweetness to the soul and even health to the body. Words have great power behind them and are meant to uplift, encourage, and praise those around us.

Psalm 119:103 uses the same picture for God’s own words: “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” You want people around you who speak life back into you.

The best way to reach those dear friends who seem far to reach is through the comforting words God has spoken to you many times. Important lessons are taught with each conversation you have with family members.

However, it is the words we use that affect the impact we have on those we love. A superhero for Christ is one who speaks and prays over the lives of others when unsure of what to say next. We yearn for more of God’s love when we are surrounded by genuine affection from those closest to us (see these Bible verses about showing appreciation to others). Use your words for kindness today to not always be right, but to speak His truth instead.

7. Philippians 2:3: Be humble

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.”

This is the best bible verse for those moments when you fall into your own selfish desires. Allowing ambition and pride to take over your mindset, will ruin relationships and above all your walk with Christ.

It will cloud your judgment and the way you perceive others. Paul tells us to value others above ourselves.

In doing this, you let go of selfish ambition. Jesus didn’t only heal people; He also cared for their physical needs, as when He fed the five thousand.

What pleases the Lord is obedience to His word. When you want a deeper relationship with God, your focus turns to the interests of others.

Christ is centered on serving and spreading his steadfast love. As Christ believers, we are to all serve through the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ.

8. Ephesians 4:32: Be kind and forgive each other

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Paul is explaining to Christ believers how to live out their lives for Christ Jesus. Matthew 18:32-35 provides us with the best bible verse for forgiving as God has endlessly forgiven us.

There is no sin too big to be forgiven by Him. We are to act on this same good measure in forgiving those we are hesitant to pardon.

The good stewards of God have joy in their hearts to act on behalf of the heavenly Father. The same mercy we expect from Christ Jesus for all our sins is the mercy we are to show others. We are not above forgiving anyone when our Creator has forgiven us.

9. Exodus 20:12: Honor your parents

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

It is the fifth commandment to respect your mother and father. It all starts within the household you grow up in (see this Scripture about family togetherness) and you carry these same morals out into the world. The word of God's teaching shows integrity to carry on with you through every place and person you encounter. Respect is not circumstantial when interacting with dear friends and strangers, it is required by the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 6:1-3 is another specific bible verse reiterating the importance of honoring your father and mother. Your heavenly father is repeating this throughout the Holy Bible for you to hold onto these words.

Your heavenly Father knows that your earthly parents hold great significance in your life. Honoring them is also where we first learn to honor everyone else.

God even calls us to respect people who test our patience. Those tests grow us in Christ Jesus.

10. 1 Peter 2:17: Honor everyone

“Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.”

There is not one single person outcasted in the eyes of the Lord when respect is due to others. Although this is not a new commandment these are the four commands of what God wants from us when interacting with everyone. In society, you have heard of many dear friends falling into the mindset that respect is earned not given.

However, this is the opposite of what God wants for the good works of His believers. As a Christ follower, your ways are to be of Christ Jesus’s which is above all.

Never speak of a poor man as less deserving than a rich one. John 13:35 says our love for one another is how people will know we are Jesus’ disciples.

It is through our own actions that good friends can experience his steadfast love. Praying for one another is one of many ways to treat those with heartfelt compassion. God’s profound impact on your life will have you treating everyone with respect despite the evil deeds others have done.

Peter also says to fear God. Honor is owed to everyone, but reverent fear belongs to God alone, who keeps showing us His glory and goodness.

11. 1 Thessalonians 5:12: Show respect and compassion

“We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you.”

The Thessalonian church and its members cherished the word of God and were the ideal image for true believers and the little children of God. As perfect as the people in this church seemed, these same Christian leaders were not exempt from their own sinful ways. Even with their imperfections, they were still to be held in high respect by those they served.

Hebrews 13:7 tells us to remember the leaders who taught us God’s word and to imitate their faith.

Christian leaders will guide you through the teachings that the heavenly father will place in front of you. These leaders are a true example of Jesus Christ in leading you in hand to the good things that God has for you.

We admire those who take on the role of the good stewards of God for our lives. It is in times that we are lost and confused of what the Lord’s message is for our life that we desperately seek out direction from any help offered.

Praying for one another is one of many ways to treat those with heartfelt compassion. The Holy Bible gives specific directions on how to treat others with kindness.

In God’s eyes, there is no one worth less of receiving respect and compassion. You are a walking image of God and all that He is.

Treating everyone equally: what the Bible says about favoritism

James gives the clearest picture of unequal treatment in the Bible. A rich man in fine clothes walks into church and is shown to a good seat, while a poor man in shabby clothes is told to stand or sit on the floor. James says that kind of distinction makes us “judges with evil thoughts” (James 2:1-4), and then he says it plainly: “if you show partiality, you are committing sin” (James 2:9).

Favoritism is serious because God Himself shows none. Peter learned this when God sent him to the house of a Roman officer: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality” (Acts 10:34). If God does not rank people by money, looks, race or status, His people can’t either.

Kindness to strangers and enemies

Jesus stretched kindness further than most of us would like: “love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return… for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil” (Luke 6:35). Paul repeats it: if your enemy is hungry, feed him (Romans 12:20), which is easier with these short Bible verses about controlling anger. And in the parable of the Good Samaritan, the man who stopped to help was the one Jesus’ listeners would have seen as an outsider (Luke 10:30-37).

The same goes for strangers. God told Israel to treat the stranger who lived among them “as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself” (Leviticus 19:34), and Hebrews 13:2 says, “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers.”

What does the Bible say about how you treat others?
