10 Helpful Bible Verses About Healing The Sick

The Bible covers many instances of God healing the sick. If there was ever any doubt about the power of God to intervene and heal diverse diseases, these Bible verses should help to set your mind at ease. Below are some Bible verses about healing the sick.

Some of the most well-known and widely-used Bible verses about healing the sick and restoring health can be found in Psalm 147:3, Jeremiah 30:17, Exodus 23:25, Jeremiah 33:6, Psalm 41:3, Matthew 10:1, Psalm 30:2, Luke 8:50, Luke 13:12, and Luke 6:19.

Psalm 147:3 NIV images pictures quotes

1. “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Psalm 147:3 NIV

Psalm 147 is an exposé about how great and mighty God is. The psalmist goes into great detail about the many reasons God is worthy to be praised. “He determines the number of stars” and “covers the sky with clouds.” This same God who has control over the elements of the universe also “heals and binds up wounds.”

This is such an amazing thought. The vastness of the universe in comparison to our frailty is undeniable. Still small and feeble though we are, we still receive the same degree of attention.

This should encourage us and remind us of just how much love God has for us. God cares about even the smallest details of our lives. It is not His desire that we should live in pain and with heartache.

This is why we are repeatedly invited to trust in God and lay our burdens at His feet.

2. “But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,’ declares the Lord, ‘because you are called an outcast, Zion for whom no one cares.’ Jeremiah 30:17 NIV

The entire chapter of Jeremiah 30 covers the prophetic declaration of Israel’s restoration. God, through Jeremiah, explains to His people the reason for their suffering, but He also shows them the path to their salvation.

In many ways, the suffering of Israel, as detailed in Jeremiah 30, was self-inflicted. Through their own disobedience and mistrust for God, they fell into the trap of their enemies and were enslaved.

Still, by verse 17, we see forgiveness and mercy being extended to them. We are in the same situation as the Israelites today.

Some of our illnesses may be a result of our own choices and actions in the past.

Poor diet, unhealthy habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and promiscuity are examples of choices with devastating long-term effects.

Ephesians 1:7 images pictures quotes

To this, God says, “we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his [God’s] grace.” (Ephesians 1:7).

God does not leave us in our pain and suffering, even if it is self-inflicted. He invites us to return to Him in their hearts and receive not just healing but total restoration.

They would be returned to their home and given a leader appointed by God. God would put a hedge of protection around them and provide for their needs. All they had to do was remain faithful.

This sounds like a win for the Israelites, and it is a win for us today. God is not just a healer of bodies and broken spirits but a restorer of lives.

Exodus 23:25 NIV images pictures quotes

3. “Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you.” Exodus 23:25 NIV.

As the Israelites prepared to enter Canaan, the land they were promised, God began laying down ground rules for their preservation through Moses. They would be entering unknown territory with ungodly practices, and God wanted His people to be set apart from them.

As God made provision for their food, shelter, and territorial expansion, He promised to also care for their health. Sickness was not a part of God’s original design, but we are plagued by diseases as a result of sin.

This does not catch God by surprise. He tells the Israelites in advance that He will be their Jehovah-Rapha, their “God who heals,” and He is reminding us of the very same thing today. He is an unchanging God (Malachi 3:6).

God sees the end from the beginning and has control over everything. With just one word, He can cast diseases out of our bodies, and with a touch, He can take away our pain. We can never truly “earn” this protection from God; it is a gift given to us freely.

The old sacrificial covenant, the shadow of Jesus, could not save the Israelites; it was only by faith that they received these blessings.

There was never any power in the sacrificing of lambs or in the celebration of holy days and festivals. Were they required under the Mosaic laws? Yes. Were they the source of protection and healing? No.

We must get this. Emphasis is often placed on the “works” of the “old law,” but none of those works were the source of the Israelites’ protection, healing, and salvation. These works were faith put into action.

We can activate our faith today by praying for each other and for ourselves. Our healing and restoration are as much in the hands of God now as it was back then.

Jeremiah 33:6 NIV images pictures quotes

4. “Nevertheless, I will bring health and healing to it; I will heal my people and will let them enjoy abundant peace and security.” Jeremiah 33:6 NIV

In the midst of darkness, death, and despair, the love of God is like a guiding light, leading His people to safety. This is the spirit and message of Jeremiah 33:6. The prophet received a vision from God foretelling the death, destruction, and devastation that would fall on the city.

It was pretty bloody. Bodies would fill the streets, buildings would be torn down, and palaces would be overrun. In contrast, Jeremiah receives the promise of health and healing for God’s people despite the death and decay all around them.

It can be easy to expect that sickness should not befall believers. It can be tempting to believe that the hand of God will prevent every illness from ever reaching our bodies.

He can, and in many cases, he does, but God does not just promise protection; He promises healing as well. To be healed, you must first be afflicted. It is important to remember this, as the enemy will try to convince us that the presence of sickness is always the result of the absence of God.

This is not true. Remembering the promises of God in our moments of sickness and weakness can give us the strength to wait on Him. It is God’s desire that we live in the peace and security that comes from trusting in Him.

The devil will try to rob you of your peace and smear your sense of security. Trust God anyway. Cling to this verse and open our hearts to receive your healing from God.

Psalm 41:3 NIV images pictures quotes

5. The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness. Psalm 41:3 NIV

David, in Psalm 41:1-3, talks about the blessings that will befall those who “have regard for the weak.” In another translation, they are referred to as “the poor.” This is consistent with the very nature of God. When Jesus walked the Earth, He spent most of His time with the poor, widowed, elderly, and afflicted.

He celebrates those who care for the less fortunate and make provisions for them. It s against our nature to be selfless, so whenever we choose to tend to the needs of others, we are reflecting the character of God.

We step into prescribed blessings such as healing and restoration by reflecting God and making Him known to others.

We cannot trick God into blessing us by routinely doing charity work, though. God searches and knows our hearts. If we do anything, no matter how good it seems to be on the surface, for vainglory or just to reap benefits, then we cancel our own blessings.

This passage reminds us of how important it is to allow ourselves to be transformed by the renewing power of God and His word.

Only when we walk with God in sincerity can we have regard for others selflessly, and only then will we receive the blessings that God promises to us.

Matthew 10:1 NIV images pictures quotes

6. Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. Matthew 10:1 NIV

As disciples of Jesus, we have the authority to heal every disease and sickness. In Romans 6:10,11, we are reminded that the same spirit that raised Jesus from the dead has been given to us and lives inside us when we are born again.

We have multiple records of Jesus healing the sick, and we see his disciples healing the sick, but how often do we exercise this authority?

Do we even believe that we have this authority over sickness? It is not just a recitation of words that will bring us healing but a life of faith and prayer.

We have no authority to do anything if we do not first believe that we do, and second, stand boldly in that authority. In James 5:14-16, we are instructed to take our sick ones to the church. It is not the building that saves, nor the people, but the “prayer of faith.”

In our current situation, where many countries are still experiencing restrictions to movement and gathering, we may feel discouraged.

However, technology has done its part to further the reach and work of God. We can still come together and pray in faith for those among us who are sick.

If we believe that God is not under COVID restrictions but is everywhere and still powerful to heal His people, there is nothing that faith-filled prayers can’t do. The fervent prayers of righteous men still avail much. (James 5:16).

Psalm 30:2 NIV images pictures quotes

7. O Lord my God, I cried to you for help, and you have healed me. Psalm 30:2 NIV

God is attentive to the condition of His people. The psalmist in chapter 30 is giving a praise report of the miraculous healing He received from God. He thanks God not just for healing His body but for saving His soul.

When we pray for healing, we should be sure that our concern is for our flesh and soul.

We know that our bodies are temporary and that, at some point, they will cease to exist. We can try our best to delay the inevitable by observing God’s health laws and being obedient to the guidelines He has left for us in His word, but at the end of the day, we will close our eyes in eternal physical sleep.

This is why when the apostles express their wishes of health, it was an all-inclusive greeting. “I wish above all things that you will prosper and be in good health, even as your soul prospers.” (3 John 1:2)

We should continue to cry out to God for our healing. He will hear and help us. But let us never lose sight of the fact that this is a temporary journey to an eternal life that awaits us hereafter. Let us seek to have spiritual health and restoration of our souls as well.

Luke 8:50 NIV images pictures quotes

8. “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.” Luke 8:50 NIV

In this passage, Jesus is addressing Jairus, a concerned father who has just been told that his daughter has died. In this moment of grief, preceded by an exercise of enormous faith, Jesus reaches out to him directly. This story is a beautiful reminder to all of us

Jairus approached Jesus to heal his daughter out of faith. He believed in his heart that Jesus could save His little girl, and he was not wrong to do so.

But at the peak of his faith expression, he is met with the worst possible news. Not was the news heart-breaking; it was the exact opposite of what he had been clinging on to in faith.

Haven’t we all been there? Haven’t we all had moments when it felt like our prayers were not being answered? We pray for healing, but the sickness seems to get worse. We as for a breakthrough, but it feels like our situation is now dead. Jesus is speaking to all of us the same way he spoke to Jairus in Luke 8:50.

He encourages us not to be afraid. Even when having faith stops making sense. He tells us to “just believe,” and we will “be healed.”

Luke 13:12 NIV images pictures quotes

9. “When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” Luke 13:12 NIV

God is willing to heal even the most hopeless situations. He’s willing to upset the norm to do it as well. The story of Jesus healing the crippled woman in Luke 13 is evidence of these facts. For eighteen years, this woman suffered not just physical pain but from judgment and scorn.

The holy men around her were of no help to her, and they treated her poorly. Jesus, on the other hand, stepped into her life and treated her with love. He saw her condition, but he also saw her.

This is encouraging news to anyone struggling with illnesses and addictions that have formed their identity over time. People may no longer see you as you want them to. Instead, all they can see is the sickness.

There is still hope for healing in Jesus. Whether it’s been eighteen years, thirty years, or fifty years. Whatever your weakness, illness, or disease, Jesus can remove it from your life and bring you back to full health.

Luke 6:19 NIV images pictures quotes

10. “And the people all tried to touch him because power was coming from him and healing them all.” Luke 6:19 NIV

Luke gives his account of the sermon on the mount in chapter 6 of his Gospel. It was not uncommon for Jesus to be surrounded by large crowds, especially when He was giving teaching sessions.

Wherever Jesus is, the power of healing is also present. The people in Capernaum and surrounding cities had learned this and were determined to be in his presence at all times.

This is still true of Jesus today. Wherever He is, the power of healing is also present. Like the multitudes, we should live in the posture of trying to touch Him.

We should reach out to heaven in prayer, study, reflection, and our daily lives. If we want to be healed, we have to go where the healing is happening.

We have to go to God and present our cases to Him. He is willing and able to save us as only He can.

Prayers for Healing Sickness

It can be difficult to know what to say or how to pray when we’re in pain or feeling discouraged. Here are a few prayers you can keep with you and whisper in your heart to gain victory over illness in Jesus’ name.

11. Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and faithfulness towards me. Thank you for loving me despite all I have done.

I claim your promises today that if I humble myself, pray and seek your face, you will hear from heaven and heal us. Father, I need a healing touch from you today. The pain is unbearable, and I am exhausted. I cannot do this by myself.

I need you, Lord. Please deliver me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

12. Father, in the name of Jesus, I turn my body over to you. Lord, you know the situation better than I do, even better than the doctors do. Strengthen my faith even when the doctors aren’t optimistic.

I believe that you have the final say. I claim the healing and restoration that is promised to your children, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

13. Oh Lord, my God, you are worthy to be praised. You are my strength in weakness; you are my rock, fortress, and deliverer. I need you now, Lord, to touch my aching body.

I am having trouble going about my day because of this disease. I pray for your forgiveness and direction as I continue on. I believe that even now, you are preserving my soul.

Thank you for your love and mercy that never fails, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Christian Quotes About Healing the Sick

14. “Affliction brings out graces that cannot be seen in a time of health.” Robert Murray McCheyne. Mr. McCheyne, in his quote, mirrors the sentiments found in James 1:3, which reminds us that “the trying of your faith worketh patience.” It is during the darkest hours of our lives that we learn to appreciate the light.

God can use any situation for His glory, which includes our sicknesses. When we learn to rely entirely upon Him, we receive blessings beyond physical healing.

15. “Begin to rejoice in the Lord, and your bones will flourish like an herb, and your cheeks will glow with the bloom of health and freshness.” B. Simpson.

Proverbs 17:22 images pictures quotes

In Proverbs 17:22, we are told that “a cheerful heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” We should learn to rejoice in every situation.

If we can only give God praise when things are going well, we should re-evaluate our relationship with God. He is not worthy of being praised only when things go our way, but even when they aren’t. Give him praise and glory and discover peace in the midst of your storms.

16. Christ is the Good Physician. There is no disease He cannot heal; no sin He cannot remove; no trouble He cannot help. James H Aughey. There is nothing too big or too complicated for God to do.

Doctors may be baffled, specialists may think you’re hopeless, but if Jesus says, “your faith has made you clean,” then science has to bow to His power.

God is ruler over all things and in all things. It is through Him that all things were made. He has dominion over every living thing in the universe, and that includes us. Nothing is too big for God to handle, but He is limited by our faith.

If you do not believe that God can save you, you won’t reach out to Him. You won’t accept the invitation He freely extends to all of us.

God invites us into a life of health, security, and abundance. If you are sick or burdened with diseases, seek His face continually. Trust in Him and be healed.
