15 Bible Verses & Christian Quotes About Faith (Must Know Reasons Why)

Faith is one of the most foundational aspects of Christianity. It is seen throughout the Bible and every Christian leader has spoken about faith. It’s too broad to be defined by a single sentence definition. Because of the bigness of faith, it’s essential to read about it and explore it in God’s Word and hear from other believers.

Below is a list and explanation of our 15 favorite bible verses and quotes about Faith that will encourage and strengthen you.

Table of Contents

1. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 NKJV

Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the hall of faith. The author starts the chapter by giving us a great definition of faith: the substance of things hoped for and evidence for things unseen.

Faith is not just a fleeting feeling that we have on our good days. It is a real substance that is found within us.

Faith is found within us when we look to the future with hope and confidence. Even when we can’t see the future and can’t see God, our faith is seen by others and testifies things unseen.

2. “Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2 NKJV

The writer of Hebrews talks about faith extensively. He tells us that we should look to Jesus as the source of our faith. As a Christian, we can look to Jesus as the author of our life—Jesus still has the pen in His hand, writing our story of faith.

Jesus is also the finisher of our faith. We can have confidence knowing that Jesus won’t leave us hanging. We will experience difficulties, challenges, unexpected circumstances, but God is with us through it all and will walk with us until the end of time.

3. “Faith cannot be inherited or gained by being baptized into a Church.  Faith is a matter between the individual and God.” - Martin Luther

4. “Know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.” Galatians 2:16 NIV

In this verse, Paul makes the important point of knowing that grace and faith in Jesus is what justifies us, and not anything we do ourselves. The word justified can also be translated as righteousness or cleared of all charges.

That means when we’re saved, we are made right with God and declared to be not guilty because of what Jesus has already done on the cross.

Believing in what Jesus has done for us is what sets us free. If we put our faith in ourselves and what we can make happen, we’ll always fall short. Because we have all sinned, we’re all in debt and can’t pay our way out on our own.

Christ is the only perfect one, and because He never sinned, He was able to pay the full price for our sin.

5. “And He said to them, "Because of the littleness of your faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.” Matthew 17:20 NASB

As a Christian, we don’t need a tremendous amount of faith to see difficult situations in our life change. Jesus says that we only need to pray with a mustard seed of faith to see something impossible to happen.

Have you ever imagined a mountain moving? That is something utterly impossible in the natural world, but nothing is impossible for God.

So why does Jesus criticize the littleness of the disciples’ faith and then tell them they only need a mustard seed, which is one of the smallest seeds? The word ‘little’ that Jesus uses here can also mean a short amount of time.

That means Jesus doesn’t critique our small amount of faith, but rather that we don’t hold onto our faith through life’s challenges. When we face mountains that look unmoveable, we need to hold tight to our faith.

6. “Faith is not the belief that God will do what you want. It is the belief that God will do what is right.” - Max Lucado

7. “Knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.” James 1:3 NKJV

I don’t think anyone enjoys taking tests. Tests require patience and preparation. The good news is that when our faith is tested, we can expect a return. Our faith can be tested through difficult situations, changes in our lives, and loss. James tells us that when our faith is tested, it’s not in vain.

The tests make us more patient, and we can walk through difficulties knowing that we will be stronger.

The good thing about taking tests is it qualifies us to do bigger and better things. Passing a test allows us to go to the next level, the next grade up, and graduate with a new certification or degree. We don't need to fear the tests, but instead, be expectant of the results.

We should pray and ask God for wisdom during the times of testing and ask for our patience to increase.

8. So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God.” Mark 11:22 NKJV

Everyone has faith in something. People have confidence in the universe, in themselves, in their qualifications and knowledge. Jesus tells us to put our trust in one thing—God.

When our hope is in God, we don’t need to be afraid of anything life throws our way. We can walk in boldness and confidence.

How do we grow in our faith and ensure our faith is in God and not something else? Reminding ourselves of God’s Word is one of the best ways to grow in faith. Reading God’s Word produces faith by reminding us of His truth, promises, and what He thinks about us.

Reading stories of Biblical heroes like Moses, Abraham, Daniel, and David inspires us to believe we have a God who loves us and leads us in victory.

9. “We give glory to God when we trust him to do what he has promised to do–especially when all human possibilities are exhausted. Faith glorifies God. That is why God planned for faith to be the way we are justified.” - John Piper

10. “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 NKJV

What does it mean to walk by faith? Does it mean we should close our eyes and not pay attention to where we’re walking? I think it’s clear that the goal is not to walk around blind. Walking by faith means that we look to God for guidance, inspiration, and we aren’t intimidated by what we see.

Circumstances in our life will always change and go up and down. If we walk by what we see, our lives will feel like a roller coaster of ups and downs. That can be fun for a few minutes, but not something you want to go through for years.

Walking by faith empowers us to look at challenges and stand firm in God. We aren’t tossed back and forth, but stand firm on God’s Word.

11. Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” Matthew 9:29 ESV

When Jesus encountered someone who was sick, disabled, or in need of a miracle, He often explained that it was done because of their faith. Our faith is like a magnet that attracts the miraculous power of God.

When we have faith, even just a mustard seed, it means that we believe God to be true to His Word, we believe that God is who the Bible says He is, and we believe that His promises for our life are true.

When our faith is limited, we place a ceiling over our life. God doesn’t ask us to jump through hoops in an attempt to unlock His promises. When we have faith, we will see God’s love, faithfulness, and goodness in our life.

12. “Faith sees the invisible, believes the unbelievable, and receives the impossible.” - Corrie Ten Boom

13. “Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith.” Habakkuk 2:4 NKJV

It's in our nature to be proud, which is a selfish feeling that says we can handle everything by ourselves. Faith says that we need to believe in a God who is infinitely bigger than us.

Faith says that we need help, and we can’t do everything we're called to on our own, with our human strength. Pride says we don't need God, but the Bible teaches that living with humility properly aligns our life.

When we decide to live by faith, our soul is upright, and our life will flourish. John wrote that every other part of our life will prosper as our soul prospers, but it starts with our soul being right within us.

14. “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,” Romans 5:1 NIV

Imagine trying to work with a group of people that you’re always arguing and fighting against. The absence of peace makes working together and being productive nearly impossible. It can make our heart and mind weary and unproductive.

Having peace with God allows us to co-labor with Him and enables us to do good works. Many Christians believe that what they do determines how God sees them.

If they behave or do something good, God will be pleased with us. Our faith needs to come first and stay as a top priority in our life. Our belief is what empowers us to live in peace.
