25 Empowering Bible Verses about Fear & Overcoming it

We know the Bible states “Do not be afraid” multiple times, but there are things that we will fear. Some fears we will grow out of, some we will keep, and some we will grow into as we get older. Fear is an extremely common emotion for all humans to have. It’s something that runs deep in both our conscious and subconscious mind and can lead to unfounded thinking or behaviors when we feel threatened or at risk of danger.

Fear will be present around certain situations which are unpredictable, such as becoming sick, being made redundant, or the death of a loved one. It is expected for us to be fearful, we don’t know how tomorrow will go, however, we can’t live in fear. We need to look towards God to help us to care for our fears, we are called to stand firm in our faith using the most mighty and formidable tools: prayer and the Bible.

Bible Verses About Overcoming Fear

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. – 2 Timothy 1:7 KJV

There will be times in our lives when we are going to feel cowardly and fearful, it’s a natural response to certain circumstances. This was a reminder to Timothy from God through Paul, that the God we serve will never give us the spirit of fear.

Fear will rise at some points in our life, therefore, we must don the armor of God (Ephesians 3:11), and be strong because the enemies will try to attack us in our weakest moments. They know they can use fear to steer us away from using the gifts God has provided for us. When we feel fear filling our bodies, God wants us to remember that we can feel safe in His arms because He will defend us if we stand firm in our belief.

And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.Deuteronomy 31:8 KJV

Imagine how Joshua felt when Moses gave this promise to him, the promise from the Lord himself. Now, imagine God speaking those words to you in your most fearful or emotional challenges.

God has your back no matter what. He has promised to go before us just as He promised Joshua and Moses. (Joshua 1:9). We can lean on this verse to remind us to trust God’s word to overcome fearful moments because we won’t face these situations alone.

So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear What man shall do unto me. – Hebrews 13:6 KJV

Why should we let our fear of what someone else’s opinion is hold us back when we have Jesus standing by us? We should never allow someone else to dictate how we feel, especially in moments of fear. And we should never be afraid of what man can do because God is in control.

Anything we fear can be rebuked in Jesus’ name because God gave us the highest mercy of all and sent His Son to the cross for us. We can only overcome our fear through God. He is on our side and willing to always fight our battles, (Exodus 14:14).

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulations: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. – John 16:33 KJV

God’s word does not say that we won’t face trials, tribulations, or fear if we follow Jesus. We will endure both times of distress and times of peace, and we are guaranteed to face some challenges.

But Jesus died for us and He promised us that we can take His yoke, and He shall give us rest (Matthew 11:10). God will shield us in those scary moments, and He will bring us the peace that was promised. If we trust fully in Him, we will not be disappointed. We can overcome our fears knowing that Jesus suffered significantly through the evilness of man so that we can walk in perfect peace and purpose.

The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. – Psalm 18:2 KJV

We know that we were not saved just so we could hide away in fear and anxiety. God wants us to trust Him so He can fulfil the promises. He can deliver you from any sprit of fear or anxiety, and it’s God’s desire to do this for you.

Only God, our rock and firm foundation, is who we cast our worries to, (1 Peter 5:7). God will protect all His children from fears and trouble, He is our fortress where we can take refuge when He needs to fight for us.

Bible Verses About Faith Over Fear

I sought the LORD, and he heard me, And delivered me from all my fears. They looked unto him, and were lightened: And their faces were not ashamed. – Psalm 34:4-5 KJV

When we look at the Psalms, we can see that God’s goodness was not just a one-time occurrence. He fulfilled His promises continuously, and David was a walking testimony that those who seek in God are filled with His gracious love.

In the times we face fears, God wants and needs us to turn to Him so He can release us from them. And because we will be radiant, full of joy, and unashamed in knowing we too can be the walking testimonies of God’s promises.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. – John 14:27

Imagine being one of Jesus’ disciples and hearing Him speak these words to you before He left the world. And now imagine the amount of fear you would feel from thinking about losing Jesus. But He left us to give us peace.

None of the situations we will face in this fleshly world will disappear, but God is always present to strengthen, guide, and assist us so we can be courageous in our struggles.

Jesus returned to Heaven to gift us with the Holy Spirit. We need to stand firm in our faith because we can look to Him for our peace through life’s storms.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for art thou with me; Thy rod and thy staff the comfort me. – Psalm 23:4 KJV

It’s so comforting to know that God is with us always. We don’t need to fear anything because God is right there next to us. We will walk through difficult times on the path God has paved for us, and we can trust God to be there to comfort us, to tell us that we don’t need to be afraid because He controls everything. God see our struggles and He knows our situations, but He will never leave us.

Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. – Luke 12:32 KJV

God is a generous God. We don’t need to worry about what we will eat or drink, (Matthew 6:31-32). By seeking God’s kingdom, He knows what we need and He will provide it for us. There is no need to fear since God always has our finest interests in mind. For those who are faithful, God will fulfill His promises.

Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, And thy foot shall not stumble. When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: Yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. – Proverbs 3:23-24

We don’t need to be afraid of the circumstances we will endure. God values us so much, and if we stay in God’s wisdom, we can be confident that He will lead us safely into our purpose to fulfil His will. God’s love, peace, and promises will guide us to cast out our fears, (1 John 4:18) because He cares for us. God’s love is perfect so if we obey Him, He will keep us safe from the struggles we face.

Bible Verses About Fear of Death

But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. – 1 Thessalonians 4:13 KJV

Witnessing others who have had loved ones pass away who did not learn who Jesus was will grieve in an entirely different way opposed to those who accepted Jesus. We are filled with the hope of what we or our loved ones will see how glorious our Father will look in Heaven after we die.

God says we are asleep, even after we have closed our eyes after death. We will witness the streets of Heaven, surrounded by His angels, we will be free, and we can rejoice in reigning with Jesus Christ.

For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall also be in the likeness of his resurrection. – Romans 6:5 KJV

If we trust in Christ, then there is no need to fear death. When we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, our soul was born new into the Spirit, our sins were washed clean, and so His righteousness came upon us.

Trusting in Christ is the most important thing we can do as a Christian because there is a room waiting for us in His house. If we were united in the death of our past life in our baptism, and we were united in His death, then we will be united with Him in the resurrection when we go to Heaven.

He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it. – Isaiah 25:8 KJV

How relieving is it to know that God will take away all death? We need not to fear the news of a loved one passing away or to fear over our own death because Jesus was sent to the cross to save us all.

And when the times comes for Jesus’ return, we can stand firm in knowing that God will remove all traces of death from the world. We can rejoice in this encouraging Scripture that we will embrace eternity without fearing the pain from death.

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. – John 11:25 KJV

The fear of death was taken away by Jesus Christ. Being saved by Christ places us under the steadfast love that God provides to us and we are cared for by Christ. By seeking God, we have opened our lives to the righteousness of God’s promises.

On our journey with Christ, we know that death will be around us, but through our trust and salvation, we are promised eternal life. Be faithful to Him, and know that you shall not be scared because when you go to sleep, you will spend an eternity with Jesus.

For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ: who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto to himself. – Philippians 3:20-21 KJV

There is comfort to know that we have citizenship in Heaven. Our fear should not be leaving the fleshly world because our focus is on Jesus Christ and the return He will make on day. We should not fear that our bodies are getting older, weaker, or sicker because we know in Heaven, our bodies will be glorified, just like Jesus.

We should only focus on doing everything that pleases God by being faithful to Him. Knowing that there will be a time in the future where we will go home to our Father brings comfort, not fear.

Bible Verses About Fear of the Future

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. – Romans 12:2 KJV

The truth about the future is that it will come with troubles and hard times. But each time we spend with God, reading His word, we’re able to see Him in a clearer light. We will understand Him better and recognize how great and wonderful He is.

It’s the time to choose how we act on our fearful thoughts about the future. God doesn’t want you to worry, entrust your feelings to the Lord and be filled with the peace knowing that God’s got this, (Romans 15:13).

There are many devices in a man’s heart; Nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand. – Proverbs 19:21 KJV

We get so occupied with focusing on our own plans, that we forget how God already has the plans for us. This Scripture can be a reminder to us that God’s plan will forever overcome the ones we have in our hearts. We can dream of what we would like our lives to look like, however, we should not stress or solidify these.

God already knows our desires, but He also knows what is best for us, even if it’s not the desires we think we should have. It will work out the way it is supposed to. God has our future in His hands, and He won’t let us down.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my way, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. – Isaiah 55:8-9 KJV

At some point in our lives, we can say we are guilty of thinking that our plans are greater. We are trying to navigate this fleshly world, and it’s easy to get caught up in preparing our own future.

But we must stop to remember that God has something WAY better planned for us because He knows what is better. Anything that we can think of… God can think greater. Anything we can do… God can do better.

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. – Psalm 32:8 KJV

We don’t need to be anxious or worried about anything because God is walking right by our side, every step of the way, holding our hand. God will never lead you in the wrong direction if your sole focus is toward Him.

He is a loving God, and He wants what is best for you. God’s instructions are clear, if we let Him guide us; His love will never fail us and we will begin to see the great promises unfold before our eyes.

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. – Jeremiah 29:11 KJV

It’s a natural for a human to feel scared or nervous for the future. But if we follow God, we will find peace. God will fulfill every promise in the plans He has for us. It may seem that life is troubling and you will hit many obstacles along the way, but God promises that you will prosper from any situation. He may not remove the difficulty right away, but He is there to help you overcome it. (2 Timothy 4:18)

Conclusion

Fear is natural, but no matter how or what you are feeling; no matter what your heart is telling you or what storms you are facing, know that the word of God says that He is good. God knows all, sees all, and does all. God would never allow us to endure more than we can handle, and He will never put you in harm’s way. He will guide you to the path that He knows is good for you, for the whole of your life. God is the same today, tomorrow, and forever.
